Text Box: FREE Tips and Suggestions for Decorating Kids’ Rooms
From Just Fun Decorating For Tweens & Teens by Gloria Hander Lyons

No Rules--Just Fun Decorating

Just Fun Decorating For Tweens & Teens is the kids’ version of No Rules—Just Fun Decorating. It includes all the same decorating basics for function, furniture layouts, color schemes, accessorizing and lighting, but the information is geared specifically for 12 to 16-year-olds who want to decorate their own bedrooms.

If you’re a tween or teen who wants to redecorate your space, your goal should be designing a room that reflects your personality and favorite activities in addition to providing the necessary furniture, storage and lighting to meet your functional needs.

Follow the guidelines provided on this website for each decorating category to learn basic decorating techniques for furniture layouts, color schemes, lighting, window treatments and accessorizing.

After deciding what pieces of furniture you’ll need in your room, the next step is arranging it in your space. Most teens’ rooms include: a bed (usually twin size), a night stand, a small desk and desk chair, a bookcase and a dresser or chest of drawers with a mirror above it.

Your list of furniture needs will vary, depending on the size of your room and additional furniture you might want to add for other activities, like an armoire or stand for a television or additional seating for friends.

Since the bed is the largest piece of furniture in the room and will probably be your focal point, decide where you want to place it before adding any other furniture pieces. It is usually placed on one of the longest walls in the room, but if you have the space, you can also angle it in a corner. This positioning creates a sense of motion rather than the more static feel of furniture placed square with the walls. Either choice is fine as long as you are pleased with the arrangement. Try to distribute your furniture pieces evenly throughout the space following the guidelines on the Furniture Layouts page.

If you plan to use the bed for your focal point, you’ll want to place it in a spot that is visible when you enter the room. The focal point for any room should create enough impact to draw your attention. For a bed, you might hang curtain panels on the wall behind the headboard, or hang a wreath on the wall above your headboard with a length of fabric draped through it that hangs down on each side of your bed.

Painting a wall mural depicting a favorite scene or a design from your bedding is another way to create a focal point. This is a fun and easy way to add your own unique style to your room. Using a Theme For Decorating Your Room

Your room should reflect your interests and personality. Choosing a theme can make it easier to decide on the colors, style of furnishings and accessories you want to use. Simply choose a theme, whether it’s an activity you like to do, such as dancing or sports; a place you’ve been or would like to go, like a country or city; or a time era you admire.

Next, gather everything you can think of to support your theme, including paint colors, fabric prints, bedding, furniture, window treatments, artwork and accessories. This might require a bit of research at the library or online to help make your theme more authentic.

One example of a theme room, from Just Fun Decorating For Tweens & Teens is based on a time era known as “The Flower-Power 1960s”. This style is all about neon colors (orange, pink, green, yellow and turquoise), flowers, peace, love and beads. If you really like color, you might choose a sunny yellow for your walls.

Use the other bright colors for accents, such as painted furniture, vases, picture frames and lamp bases. Paint or stencil colorful flowers, hearts and the word “Love” on one or two of the walls, but don’t overdo it. Your bedding can be a bright solid color like turquoise, with contrasting bright orange, yellow or green throw pillows in fabric or fake fur. For a unique bedside table lamp, cover the lamp shade in fake fur.

Hang a colorful beaded curtain behind the headboard of your bed or hang it from the ceiling as a room divider to section off a sitting area filled with bright colored floor pillows in floral fabrics or fake fur. Use tie-dyed fabric for curtains and throw pillows for the bed or floor.
